Dining room chairs made of Cherry

Medford Mail Tribune - Going with the Grain shows a picture of me in the midst of making some final touches to a set of tall back chairs that have an inlay of purple heart front and back.
The main wood used for the chairs is cherry with a layer of purple heart glued between the layers of wood for color interest.
The inlay of purple heart on each chair is carved: three chairs have palm trees and three have pineapples. These particular motifs were of important symbology for the east coast clients.
Pineapples in particular are a symbol of hospitality originally from the Caribbean. Pineapples were brought back to the east Coast by ship Captains in the 1700s. A pineapple would be placed in the
center of the dining table and friends and neighbors would be invited to come and eat with the family.
The upholstery also had a palm tree design reflecting the Caribbean origins of the motif.
